STAYING EVERGREEN: VARKALA

Varkala is the kind of beach destination that’s known more for its views of the beach, than the wave experience. Littered with gigantic rocks against which lashes out the sea, the beach though rough hasn’t dampened the tourist arrivals to this destination; considered as the most charming of all beaches in Kerala. Surrounded by gorgeous cliffs on which stand the numerous resorts, homestays, Ayurvedic cottages and shacks, Varkala is also a surfing destination. But its biggest hideaway is its spiritual and historical face.

Bali Tharpanam and the British
While most leisure resorts at Varkala come up with new additions and Ayurvedic facilities annually to meet the upcoming seasonal crowd, this beach town has been retaining its cultural fabric without any change. A scene worth experiencing is the Bali Tharpanam which begins every day from early morning onwards. It is a sacred ritual offered by family members for the souls of their deceased members. A row of Hindu priests sit on raised sand-beds on the beach and take the offerings, all the while blessing and praying for the departed souls.

The blessed offering is then immersed in the waters of the beach by the family members. Even tourists who are non-hindus can perform these poojas for the souls of their departed friends or relatives.

And while this scene of religiosity makes for a different kind of beach experience, 20 kms away is an ancient fort built in 1695 by the British during their early days in Kerala.

A visit to the fort and its neighbouring villages takes you through other smaller beaches which are unadulterated and offer a unique peace of mind.

All this before you finally head back to spend the night on the cliff overlooking the main beach where after a day of spirituality and heritage, you get all the time in the world to be lost in the sight of the distant beach as reggae music, good food and fine wine shape that perfect beach ambience for you.
